Setting a Contact Status to Unsubscribed

When a contact’s status is set to unsubscribed, there are a number of behaviors that change for the contact.

  1. No emails will be sent to the contact even if the contact is on a list. Setting a contact’s status to ‘unsubscribed’ effectively puts them on a do not contact list.
  2. The contact will not be removed automatically from any lists or tags.
  3. Any automations that the contact is in will automatically be cancelled. The contact remains in the automation at whatever step they were in at the time of unsubscribing, but the automation is put into a cancelled state for that contact. If the contact is set back to a status of ‘subscribed’, the automations remain in a ‘cancelled’ state. These cancelled automations can be ‘resumed’. If they are resumed, the automation flow will continue at the last step it was in before the automation was cancelled.
