Changing a WooCommerce Subscriptions plan price does not automatically change PayPal Subscription

If you are using PayPal standard as a payment option in  WooCommerce Subscriptions, there are multiple issues.

One of the issues occurs when you change a user's subscription plan price in WooCommerce the linked PayPal subscription plan won't be updated. Thus, if the original subscription plan was for $200/mo and you change the WooCommerce Subscription to $149/mo for the user, they will still be billed $200/mo by PayPal unless you manually update the PayPal subscription also.

Steps To Take

Find WooCommerce PayPal Subscriptions

  1. From the WP Admin menu select WooCommerce > Subscriptions.
  2. From the post status menu at the top, select Active for the subscription status to display so you are only working with active subscriptions.
  3. Then, from the filter menu at the top select PayPal for the payment method.
    1. Optionally search for a specific product to work with.
    2. Click on the Filter button.
  4. Optionally, you can then click on the Next Payment column heading to sort the date by payment date.
  5. Open the WooCommerce Subscriptions details for a specific individual subscription by clicking on the subscription number listed in the column called Subscription. (hint: you can ctl-click / command-click on the subscription number to open it in a new window.
  6. Locate the PayPal Subscription ID, highlight it, and copy to clipboard.

Find the related PayPal Subscription.

  1. Login to PayPal.
  2. Click Pay & Get Paid > Subscriptions.
  3. Click Subscriptions again in the left column menu.
  4. Paste into the search box the subscription ID that you copied from the WooCommerce subscription detail and click the search icon.
  5. Click on the Subscription ID.
  6. Review the data and if the pricing needs to be updated, click on Update.
  7. Update the price. Note the warning that price changes within 10 days of the next payment won't take effect until the following payment.
  8. Save Updates.
  9. To update additional subscriptions, scroll to the top of the PayPal screen and click on the <-- arrow to return to the search screen.  You can then copy another subscription ID from WooCommerce and check the PayPal status.
